Prismacolor Colored Pencil
Taken from Photograph of Zion National Park by Shawn Taylor July 2013

This is the first completed drawing in a series of the National Parks that I have been to. I have already done a drawing of Mount Rainier National Park in my Cascade volcanoes series, so the series includes all the other national parks I have visited. I have started with Zion National Park. I will follow with Bryce Canyon National Park, Redwood, Yellowstone, and finally Olympic. I am excited about these drawings. They will all be from family photographs with the exception of Yellowstone. This drawing of Zion National Park is from a photograph taken by my brother on a family trip in 2013. I really like how the contrast between the sky and the cliff turned out. I am used to drawing using mostly greens and blues because most of my drawings are from the Pacific Northwest. These desert colors gave me a new challenge. I did a lot of layering to get the correct colors. I am pleased with how it turned out.

  4. Russell, I like the desert hues in your mountain and love the colors of the clouds in your sky. This is a really nice colored pencil landscape. We have lots of Yellowstone photos if you would like to do a picture from a photo. Maybe I could find some photos from the year your family met us there for a vacation. I’ll spend some time on Sunday looking for some to e-mail you. Any particular Yellowstone scenes you are interested in?

  5. Russell, this is beautiful! I love prismacolor pencils the best. They seem to know what you want to do and easily glide smoothly across the page. Feels like painting. If only I could draw as well as you. You capture the feeling of being there. I enjoy all of your work. Keep it coming. Love, Aunt Mary. PS, my kids (your cousins) set up my comment title!
